1. General DescriptionSodium polysulphide solution is a reddish-brown to dark amber alkaline liquid containing a mixture of sodium sulfide and elemental sulfur dissolved in water. It is characterized by a strong odor of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and has high reducing and alkaline properties.
In agriculture, it is used primarily as a fungicide, insecticide, and soil amendment, while in industry it serves as a chemical intermediate, depilatory, and flotation agent.
2. CompositionTypical industrial/agricultural grades contain:
Active sodium polysulfide: 20–50% by weight
3. Mode of Action (Agricultural Use)
When applied to plants or soil:
The polysulfides release elemental sulfur and hydrogen sulfide upon hydrolysis.
These compounds act as contact fungicides and acaricides, disrupting respiration and enzyme systems in fungal spores, mites, and insects.
Also provides sulfur nutrition to crops and can reduce certain soilborne pathogens.
A. Agricultural Uses
Fungicide/insecticide: Control of powdery mildew, mites, scale insects, and certain fungal diseases on fruit trees, vines, and ornamentals.
Dormant spray: Applied during the dormant season on deciduous trees to kill overwintering pests.
Soil treatment: Occasionally used to suppress fungal or nematode activity.
B. Industrial Uses
Leather processing: Hair removal and de-liming.
Pulp & paper: Kraft pulping additive.
Ore flotation: Sulfide mineral depressant.
Chemical manufacture: Intermediate for sulfur dyes and thiochemicals.
